Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama wished the national netball team success at the World Netball Championships in Singapore next month.

He made the comments when receiving the team’s  iTatau at Government Buildings on behalf of His Excellency Ratu Epeli Nailatikau. The President is on tour of the Middle East.

The Fiji netball side leaves our shores later this week.

Commodore Bainimarama acknowledged the hard yards put in by players for the call of the nation. A couple of these players have taken leave from work without pay.

“This is it,” he said.

“On behalf of the President who is away, the Government and the people of Fiji, I wish you more wins, and may you return victorious.

“You have endured a lot at training and have showed that Fiji can be up there competing with the rest of the nations.”

Commodore Bainimarama urged all players to give their best and to play for the nation.

Government had also provided financial assistance to the Fiji side which is ranked 5th in the world behind New Zealand (1), Australia (2), England (3), and Jamaica (4).

The only other team from the Pacific that is in the top 10 is Samoa (10).

The World Netball Championship (WNC) will be held in Singapore from July 3-10.

Team manager Asenaca Waqanivavalagi said players were all prepared with the task ahead and were aware of the expectations of the nation.

She said the players were in their final stages of preparation and were getting psyched up for the event.

“We are having training twice a day now, which mostly includes the fine tuning of some areas. Unfortunately we were unable to secure proper facilities for training to do more skill and court work,” Mrs Waqanivavalagi said.

The team will be departing for Singapore on the 25th of June.
