New Zealand beat Australia 24-17 in the final of the Rugby Sevens at Delhi 2010 today. The Kiwis are the first team to win four consecutive Gold medals in a team sport event at the Commonwealth Games. The Australian Men’s Hockey team can also achieve this feat if they beat New Zealand on Thursday in the final.

New Zealand remains unbeaten in all of its 21 Rugby Sevens matches across all four Commonwealth Games the sport has been played in since being was introduced at Kuala Lumpur in 1998. Liam Messame (NZL) and Lote Raikabula (NZL) won their second Gold medal. Amasio valance (NZL) is still the only person to have won three Gold medals in Rugby Sevens at the Commonwealth Games.

Two chip-and-chase tries in the second half secured South Africa the Rugby Sevens Bronze medal with a 17-14 victory over England at Delhi University on Tuesday. A well-placed kick to the corner from Renfred Dazel (RSA) saw Bernado Botha (RSA) cross the try line within a minute of the start to claim South Africa’s first points against England.

England was swift to respond as Mathew Turner (ENG) barged through two South African tacklers to level the score before Ben Gollings (ENG) converted.

Another try to England, courtesy of Dan Caprice (ENG) and another accurate conversion from Gollings saw England take a 14-5 lead at half-time. But a chip-and-chase try from Cecil Afrika (RSA) in the ninth minute brought South Africa to within two points of England.

Then Lubabalo Mtembu (RSA) chased down his own kick to the corner to put the South Africans in front with under a minute remaining for what proved to be the Bronze medal-winning points.- GNS
