Port Adelaide stars David Rodan and Alipate Carlile are excited to see the talents that will be on display on Saturday at the AFL Fiji David Rodan Cup.

The duo is in the country to officiate at the tournament and also to conduct clinics as well as select the Fiji Under-16 team to play in the Oceania AFL tournament in Tonga later this year.

“When it was launched two years ago, I never expected the numbers to increase so rapidly. It is so encouraging to see all these young boys in the sport,” Rodan said.

More then 40 players from 14 schools in Suva and Nausori will be fielded into six teams that will play round-robin games at the Veiuto School grounds on Saturday.

Numbers are expected to increase with the registration open until an hour before the kick off of the tournament.

“We’re just here to see where the sport is at and where these boys knowledge of the sport is at, offer a hand in techniques ad do our part in promoting the sport in Fiji,” Carlile said.

“This is a amazing opportunity for the local boys to try their hand at the sport, Fijians are a talented bunch and we have not only David but Nick Naitanui who have paved the way for Fijians in AFL.”

The David Rodan Cup kicks off at 8:30am.
